چکیده

Traditional satellite scatterometer wind retrieval algorithms consist of point-wise wind estimation and pointwise ambiguity removal. Point-wise estimation yields multiple estimates, or ambiguities, for the average near-surface ocean wind in each scatterometer resolution element, requiring subsequent ambiguity removal. Even though some point-wise ambiguity removal techniques achieve a high skill, they are still subject to error and usually rely on numerical model analysis fields. An alternative to point-wise wind retrieval, one that does not rely on numerical model analysis fields, is fieldwise or model-based retrieval. An automated field-wise retrieval algorithm is presented and tested on NSCAT data. Results indicate that field-wise retrieval provides a reliFigure 1: Field-wise wand :retrieval is one possible alternative to the traditional retrieval method. An Algorithm to Assess the Accuracy of NASA Scatterometer Data - Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium Proceedings, 1998. IGARSS '98. 1998 IEEE International

A simple wind field model can be used to evaluate the accuracy of pointwise ambiguity removal for NASA Scatterometer (NSCAT) data. Errors in pointwise ambiguity removal result in large model-fit errors when the pointwise wind estimates are assimilated into the model. By thresholding the error, regions containing ambiguity removal error can be identified. For many of these regions, the ambiguity...

Inherent in all empirical estimates of the geophysical model function (which relates the wind t o the normalized radar cross section, NRCS, of the ocean surface) is uncertainty caused by parameters not included in the empirical model. This can be thought of as variability in the NRCS for given wind conditions. W h e n the estimated variability is included in the max imum likelihood wind retriev...

NSCAT Views Land and Ice - Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium Proceedings, 1998. IGARSS '98. 1998 IEEE International

The NASA Scatterometer (NSCAT) is a spaceborne scatterometer which flew aboard the National Space Development Agency of Japan's ADvanced Earth Observing Satellite (ADEOS). Although the three year mission was cut short due to failure of the spacecraft solar array, NSCAT returned over 9 months of observations of the Earth. NSCAT was originally designed to measure winds over the ocean; however, it...
